The natural health researchers at Institute for Vibrant Living (IVL) have investigated the new ionic and monatomic forms of vitamin and mineral supplements. Here is their report:

Did you know that it is the bioavailability of a supplement that determines how much will be absorbed into the blood stream and how much will simply pass out as waste?

What is Bioavailability?
Bioavailability is the amount of the nutrient which is absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract. Supplements should be digested in the stomach, enter the bloodstream and work through the body to perform their necessary purpose.

Ionic and monatomic minerals are the only minerals that are 100% bio-spontaneously available – which means the second you start using them, you can also start to benefit from them.

Ionic minerals are measured in angstroms (ten-billionths of a meter). They are not visible by the human eye. Because they are so small, ionic and monatomic minerals are readily available for absorption at the cellular level just like water.

This minute angstrom size is their key to utilization, storage, and distribution in your body and within each cell.

Do they Dissolve and Digest?
High-quality supplements have higher levels of bioavailability than cheaper, mass-produced supplements. Good quality supplements are likely to disintegrate and dissolve more rapidly, enabling digestion to begin earlier.

As a test, professional standard supplements should dissolve in a glass of water within 20-30 minutes.

There is a further hurdle to bioavailablity. Nutrients in food and supplements should enter the blood stream via the small intestine.

However, stomach acid and some enzymes in the stomach can damage or even destroy certain nutrients, so supplement ingredients need to be wrapped in a special delivery system to provide a protective layer against stomach acids.

Enteric coating is used on many drugs to allow them to effectively reach the small intestine where the alkaline environment allows the tablet to release their vital contents.

As a guideline, tablets and supplements with an enteric coating do not have to be taken with meals, whereas non-enteric coated tablets do.

Enteric coating is expensive and since few people know it is necessary for bioavailability, manufacturers often will skip this procedure, particularly in the cheaper brands of supplements.

However, some supplements contain ingredients which are not susceptible to stomach acid, (calcium carbonate is an example) so an enteric coating is not always necessary to be effective.

What about Liquid Formulas?
Liquid vitamin and mineral supplements, by their very nature, are superior in absorption because they don't need to withstand stomach acid and are assimilated more rapidly than capsules or tablets.

However, quality of the product is still the key issue, as a poor grade of nutrient will be just that, poor in nature and performance. That's why a monatomic form of the nutrient or mineral is superior.

Cost vs. Effectiveness
When buying supplements, lower prices can be false economy. Measure the value by looking at dosages of desired ingredients, as well as the cost per serving.

Be sure to choose a reputable company's brand that uses all-natural sources with maximum bioavailability characteristics. (If they act like they don't know the term bioavailability, then you have the wrong company.)

So, by following these helpful tips - and asking the right questions when ordering your supplements - you should be well on your way to better natural health!
